The whole organization of DepEd Naga City which includes the teaching and non-teaching officials, staff, and the learners in unity with the City Government of Naga raised the Flag of Independence during the 121st celebration of the Philippine Independence held at Plaza Quince Martires, Naga City. The said occasion was well-attended by the different stakeholders, agencies, and civic sectors. Participants in the occasion sang the Philippine National Anthem as the flag was hoisted. Attendees were also emboldened in spirit as they listened to the wisdom of those who share their thoughts in the program.
“Let us look into the meaning of Independence Day in our lives. Are we truly free? Are we free in the real sense? Hence, the Department of Education marked in its agenda to deliver the basic education that is not only with quality but more importantly, liberating.” These are some of the brilliant ideas spoken by the Schools Division Superintendent of DepEd Naga City, William E. Gando, CESO VI, as he delivered his opening remarks in the program.
The Superintendent also underscored the concept of freedom especially in the context of education and its implication to the lives of every Filipino in our time. In its connection to the philosophy of education, he explained the authentic meaning of liberating education as an instrument to instill freedom that empowers the citizenry and conquers poverty and ignorance. ‘It appears, he added, that while Filipinos are physically free from the burdens and tyranny of invaders, some remain slaves because of ignorance. This must be one of the reasons that drive the department to ensure quality education to all the learners making them truly free. Liberating education transcends even in the situations of poverty and those who are physically challenged.”
Moreover, Congressman Gabby Bordado eloquently cited in his message about some historical artifacts of the declaration of the Philippine Independence. He said, ‘If we do not study history, we are doomed to repeat the horrors of the past’. Cong. Bordado was emphatic to speak of history that seemed to have been tainted by fake news and historical revisionism or changing history by asserting a different idea about historical facts.
Meanwhile, the Hon. John G. Bongat, City Mayor, humbly expressed his gratitude to all the people who made every similar occasion laudable and meaningful during his term. The outgoing mayor gratefully recognized everyone’s patriotism and inspired them to continue their passion to do the same as Filipinos who love their country. This was his last Independence Day celebration as the Mayor of Naga since his term ends on June 30, 2019. –Michael A. del Rosario
